INCOME POLARIZATION IN PAKISTAN Measurement and Decomposition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Polarization in context of income distribution refers to the decline of middle class. The empirical analysis of polarization is quite unexplored area in Pakistan. The present paper measures polarization for Pakistan and its rural and urban segments and the novel concept of time-decomposition of polarization has also been applied for the first time in Pakistan for the three latest survey years of 1998-99, 2001-02 and 2004-05. The Bossert-Schworm measure (2006) of polarization has been used whereas the units of measurement include both the aggregate household as well as per adult equivalent household. It has been found that in general, throughout the period of analysis, polarization has followed a declining trend in Pakistan and its rural-urban areas. The time-decomposition of polarization has suggested that the decreasing mean incomes relative to the median of the higher income groups and the decreasing within group inequalities of both higher and lower income groups are among the major factors contributing to the change in polarization overtime in Pakistan.

This paper explores the link between polarization and inequality and proposes some analytical methods to decompose the Duclos, Esteban, and Ray (2004) polarization index by population groups or income sources. In some cases, the decomposition methods were extended to the Esteban and Ray (1994) one. The main aim of these decomposition methods is to extend the interpretation derived from polariza...

During 1990’s and early 2000’s income inequality in Italy has been higher than that observed in many other OECD countries, but has not displayed any significant trend, upward or downward. For the most part, this evidence relies on summary measures of inequality. By their very nature, summary indices of inequality may not capture aspects such as multi-modalities and polarization. This paper appl...
متن کاملLivestock Income, Male/female Animals, and Inequality in Rural Pakistan
This paper uses income decomposition techniques to demonstrate the importance of livestock income in improving rural income distribution. It is based on three-year household panel data (1986 to 1989) from rural Pakistan. The paper first decomposes total income among five sources: agricultural, nonfarm, livestock, rental and transfer. This shows that livestock income is inequality-decreasing and...
